The Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart with Moog Music's Animoog:
"The Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart, who visited the Moog Factory on April 19, 2012 to test the development of the Grateful Dead Expansion Pack exclaimed, "Holy transmogrifica-tion, Batman... Amazing!" after hearing the Grateful Dead's 44-year-old recordings trans-formed into sound design tools for artists.
The Grateful Dead Expansion Pack comes on the heels of Moog's release of Animoog V2 on December 21, 2012. Animoog V2 is free for existing Animoog users. It includes many user requested features and product enhancements, such as: accelerometer integration which gives Animoog owners the ability to tilt their iPad in any direction as an interactive 3D modulation source; note hold and scale lock, and tools for advanced users like, Load/Save MIDI CC maps, Audiocopy/Audiopaste integration and support for the new Audiobus platform. Also, as a holiday gift, Animoog V2 features a powerful 4 Track Recorder, which gives Animoog users the ability to record audio from within Animoog or import audio tracks directly from their iTunes library. Users can then split, loop, copy, paste, and share individual clips, or mix down entire songs and upload them directly to SoundCloud, all from within the Animoog's universe. This 4 Track Re-corder will be free to existing users until Dec. 31, 2012 at which time it will revert to it's regular price of $4.99 in the Animoog Store."

Woke up to a nice surprise in my inbox - Robb from Reason: Patch a Day has released an update to the fantastic Kick Toolkit ReFill:
"I wanted to take a moment to thank you again for purchasing my Kick Toolkit Refill. I had no idea what kind of response I would get when I first started putting the refill together, but I was both pleased and thankful for every order I received. Thanks!
Words are nice, of course, and it's great to get a pat on the back from someone who appreciates you, but you can't load a thank you into Redrum or NN-XT. That's why, in addition to my thanks, you're also getting an updated Kick Toolkit Refill for the holidays! The updated refill fixes a navigation issue with the NN-19 folder, renaming it to Samplers, which now contains a folder for the NN-19 patches and a separate folder for the simple Combinators. Hopefully this makes a little more sense to use on your end.
Also included in the update are 90 new kick drum samples, putting the total sample count at 400 analog kicks.
Given that I made changes with the folder structure, I'd recommend you keep the old refill, until you're certain that this update doesn't "break" any of your projects.
Thanks again for supporting Reason Patch A Day and for sending a few dollars my way.
Take care,
Robb

The new Vladislav Delay album, Kuopio, is available now on Raster Noton!
"With “Kuopio”, Raster-Noton releases the second full length album by Vladislav Delay aka Sasu Ripatti. The record features eight new songs which allow the listener to dive into Delay’s cosmos of deep and likewise organic sounds. Subtle yet complex electronic manipulations are used, resulting in a high degree of variation within every single track and a nearly imperceptible intensification of their density. Progressive and energetic rhythms play an important role as already indicated in his recent release “Espoo” (r-n141), the EP which forms a bridge between his former album “Vantaa” (r-n136) and “Kuopio”, best illustrated by the track “Kulkee”, meaning ‘to move forward’. “Kuopio” clearly represents a further attempt to depict the finnish landscape as well as its isolated charm, which is also obvious from its design and conceptional approach by referring to the city of Kuopio."

Push and Ableton Live 9 look like a winning combination:
"Ableton Push is specially designed for making beats, with step sequencing and pad modes that work side by side. Here, Ableton Product Specialist Dennis DeSantis demonstrates how to make a natural-sounding, nuanced beat using Push."
Wow! Finally a true FM synthesizer inside Reason! Check out the details:
"The PX7 FM Synthesizer is a six operator FM synth for the Reason rack. As a faithful recreation of the popular DX series keyboards, it provides a wealth of new sounds, ranging from classic 80's bass and brass to modern textures, leads and growls.
But PX7 is not only an emulation of a classic keyboard. With an easier interface, macro controls for quick and powerful tweaking of sounds, stereo spread, and full integration with the Reason rack, it takes FM synthesis into the age of Reason.
In FM synthesis, or Frequency Modulation, sounds are generated by layering or modulating the frequency of sine wave oscillators, called operators. The 32 selectable algorithms decide how the operators are connected, and which modulates what.
The envelopes, one for each operator, are more advanced than those you typically see in synths, with a number of different breakpoints for extremely precise control over the modulation.
With the new macro controls you get tons of new tones out of a single patch — even without a full understanding of FM synthesis.
PX7 includes a great set of new patches and Combinators with sounds ranging from modern to futuristic. But perhaps best of all: the PX7 FM Synthesizer is patch-compatible with the classic it's based on—and faithfully reproduces its trademark tone. A ton of patches from the original is included with PX7. Our online patch converter takes Yamaha DX7 patches and converts them to PX7 format, giving you access to tens of thousands of presets for all styles of music."

Propellerhead Product Specialist Mattias Häggström Gerdt explores keyboard splits in Reason:
"When you have 88 keys you have a lot of possibilities. Maybe you don't want to be locked in to just that grand piano sound? Maybe you want to do entire performance from your keyboard only? A keyboard split patch could be the answer! Product specialist Mattias shows you how to set it up and lets you in on some useful tips along the way."

By finding a whole new continent Columbus redrew the map of our planet. Now it´s your turn to do so. By making use of this ReFill you can combine enchanting and haunting rhythms coming from all continents, maybe even from other planets as well as Wavedrummin opens doors to percussive bliss that have never been opened before. At the studio in Central Europe Soundcells recorded their favorite hits and bits coming from the Wavedrum by Korg and - since version 2 - the incredible Impaktor by BeepStreet. The result has become this ReFill - a work of art, a tool that lets you draw your own restyled map of our precious planet."

Myke Dodge Weiskopf lives the kind of life that makes me mad jealous. Traveling the world recording shortwave broadcasts and indigenous musicians, sharing the bounty on his website - www.myke.me. His next adventure, planned for March 2013, will take him to the archipelago of Socotra in the Gulf of Aden between Somalia and Yemen.
"Socotra is virtually untouched by tourism or mainland culture, a unique mixture of East African and Middle Eastern influences. I'll be traveling with photographer Kelly Davidson and a Socotri guide around the main island for two weeks in March of 2013. We'll travel through mountain villages, caves, and seaside towns to meet the people of Socotra and preserve their songs, stories, and folk traditions. Along the way, I'll tune in for the next season of ShortWaveMusic, recording regional radio stations from Somalia, Eritrea, Yemen, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Oman, and beyond -- adding to the more than 24 hours' worth of recordings from over 60 countries now available at www.myke.me."
To fund his latest enterprise Myke has set up a Kickstarter.com page with some cool perks for backers including a commemorative QSL card, CDs, framed prints from the trip and even handmade gifts from Socotri artists! He's trying to raise at least $3500 USD, which pays for plane fare, a translator/guide, payment for the Socotri musicians and singers he records, on-line hosting for the project and equipment repair. Talk about a shoe-string budget!
"With a little MORE money, I could pay extra to the musicians, or donate play and sporting goods to Socotri children, or upgrade my equipment to bring back better recordings. But I can't do it all alone. Please consider donating some of your hard-earned holiday money to ShortWaveMusic … for yourself or on behalf of another adventurous and open-minded friend or loved one."
Being the recording and tech geek that I am, I had to ask Myke about his gear set-up:
"My radio set-up is an Eton E1XM and a Sony PCM D-50 recorder.
My field recording setup includes a pair of head worn Church Audio CA-2 stereo omni capsule mics, an Audio Technica AT-8035 shotgun, and an Audio Technica BP4025 stereo field mic.
Until recently I was using an Edirol R-09 recorder, but I donated it to an NGO in Mali while I was there, so I am back to using the D-50 for both purposes.
I have to be quite aware of safety in the places I travel, so I need to keep a low profile in terms of the amount of equipment I carry and also the quickness with which I can set it up and break it down. With my current set up, I can be "on the air" in under a minute, and (in case of danger) packed up and on my way in the same amount of time. One of the principal tenets of traveling in Africa and the Middle East is that you don't want to make yourself a target, and I'd rather not be the foreigner with all the expensive gear out in the open."

Peter Dines creates some of my favorite commercial Reaktor ensembles, and his latest - the Chroma and Gris Gris Sequenced Monosynth looks killer! The Chroma sequencer section has a clean interface and the ability to both draw in patterns, play parts with a midi controller, add slur (glide) and a unique "Scribble" control to write in data. The Gris Gris synth section is a subtractive style synth with "Flux" controls, which add unpredictable instability to the oscillator mix.
"Chroma is a performance oriented monosequencer and VA carefully tuned for ergonomic ease of use and glitch free operation in standalone and plugin mode. Slur features in Chroma match up with legato and glide features in the Gris-Gris synth to create a slinky sinuous note articulation.
Sequences can be created and controlled via mouse, MIDI, Konkreet Performer, TouchOSC and Lemur. Since there is now full OSC support in the Reaktor plugin version, you can do everything with Chroma in your preferred DAW that you can do stand-alone. A dream come true!"
Nightingale track from the Project: Mooncircle 10th Anniversary Comp! Video shot and edited by Benny Wynn Williams. If you haven't picked up this release yet you should really jump on it - with songs by Robot Koch, fLako, Rumpistol, 40 Winks, Long Arm, Rain Dog and a slew of others!
"Project: Mooncircle, as the name reveals, has been on a journey to the moon since day one, exploring the frontiers of music and art, always looking for new discoveries and giving a different perspective to look at the earth. In it's 10 year history the label has published roughly 100 releases by equally as many artists from all corners of this globe and, therefore, the selection of sounds on this compilation represents the development of the label from the past, present and going into the future."
Brian Trifon of Trifonic with another sound design video tutorial:
"As a producer, one of the challenges of working with virtual instruments and digital recordings is that you often have to add character back to them to make your tracks sound right.
Digital sounds can be so clean that they lack warmth, depth, vibe, soul... whatever you want to call it, the bottom line is your recordings will fall flat without some work to add life into your tracks.
In this video, Brian Trifon of Trifonic demonstrates a couple techniques for overcoming this challenge using delay and vocal transformer plugins."
Possibly from growing up in the late 80s and early 90s I have a nostalgic fondness for the so-called "shoegaze" style of music. The band Swervedriver turned me on to the sound with "Son of Mustang Ford". So when I heard of the new Beautiful Noise documentary now seeking funding on Kickstarter I knew I had to donate:
"The definitive documentary about influential 80’s and 90’s guitar bands who harnessed massively loud sounds using a sea of effects pedals and delivered some of the most BEAUTIFUL NOISE ever recorded.
8 years in the making, with over 50 interviews, band members, music icons and tastemakers.
BEAUTIFUL NOISE is an in-depth exploration of a music movement in the late 20th century, a fascinating period when some innovative musicians mixed guitar noise into conventional pop song structures while maintaining a philosophy of letting the music speak for itself.
Although many of the people interviewed are notoriously press shy they have opened up about their music and experiences from over 20 years ago; how they defied the rules and became sonic innovators that have inspired so many.
Currently the documentary is in the final stages for worldwide release, and we need your help to raise the $75,000 to pay for limited run licensing and finishing costs to distribute in Film Festivals and on DVD/Blu-Ray."
