On this day in 1927 the
Columbia Phonographic Broadcasting System, later simply known as
CBS, went live on the air from flagship station
WOR in Newark, New Jersey. The network was sold a week later to
William S. Paley, heir to the "La Palina" Cigar company which became popular from it's advertisements on radio. Paley built the network from this small radio affiliate to the monster media conglomerate it is today.
