Emulating the King - Introducing MONARK!

Brent Kallmer takes a look at Native Instruments newest synth MONARK - for Reaktor and the free Reaktor Player:

"The Minimoog is probably the most famous hardware synthesizer of all time—and likely the most emulated in the world of software. So does the world really need another Minimoog emulation? Native Instruments thinks so: Their new REAKTOR-based synth, MONARK, is based on years of research—but how does it sound?"

And in case you missed it, here's the dubspot video Brent refers to in the video:

dubspot - Building instruments in Reaktor

"Dubspot Electronic Music Production and Sound Design Instructor Evan Sutton explains how to make basic connections and building a subtractive synthesizer using Native Instruments Reaktor's Built In Modules in this new tutorial. There are many levels to Reaktor's hierarchy. In the last tutorial, we spent most of our time on the Instrument level, making small changes and swapping out effects. If you missed the first tutorial, you can find it here.

In the second installment, we'll go even deeper and build our own instrument from the ground up. We'll be using Reaktor's Built In Modules, which are tools that range from simple math to complex signal processors. Many of these modules are the basic tools used in modular synthesis. We'll use these to build a simple synthesizer with one oscillator and an amplitude envelope. Remember to keep the volume down while you're setting up your modules.

It's important to explore basic signal flow in Reaktor. There are infinite possibilities for experimentation, but these concepts are the starting point for building larger and more complex ensembles."

dubspot Propellerheads Reason 6 Tutorial:

Pulveriser x 3 - Bass Compression, Filter Effects +

"In this tutorial Dubspot instructor and electronic musician Chris Petti takes you through three very powerful uses and applications for the versatile new Pulveriser effect processor in Propellerhead's Reason 6. Pulveriser brings together crunchy compression, dirty distortion, a multimode filter and flexible modulation in a single sound-crunching effect. Crush, mangle, and destroy your sounds. Apply careful parallel compression to bring out the details of a sample or recording. Use the envelope follower when recording live instruments for responsive, expressive filter effects." -dubspot

Live / Intro to Warping + Slicing Audio - Thavius Beck

"What exactly is Warping and Slicing? One of the things that makes Ableton Live such a unique and powerful piece of software is a fundamental feature which completely changes how you are able to interact with your audio. This feature is called Warping. Warping allows you to manipulate the tempo and pitch of your audio independently of one another. This means that you can change the pitch of a song to fit the pitch of another without changing the tempos, or you can slow down or speed up a piece of audio without altering the pitch. As someone who came from using hardware samplers like the Akai S-900, Roland W-30, and even the MPC 1000, you can imagine just how mind-blowing a discovery this was for me at the time... when you learn how to effectively warp audio and apply it to your songs, every sample becomes a new piece of elastic to be stretched to your liking." -dubspot

Sound Design w/ NI's Reaktor: Rolodecks + Maschine

"One of the interesting things that I find in my travels working for Native Instruments, is that there seem to be a whole lot of people out there who don't really understand what Reaktor is. Reaktor tends to be the one instruments from NI that actually scares people because it looks so complex and sophisticated. Reaktor is a completely modular system that allows you to build virtually any digital audio device that you can imagine. At Dubspot, we teach our Sound Design & Synthesis students how to dive deep into Reaktor's guts to create their own custom synthesizers and gain a greater appreciation for modular synthesis." - dubspot

High Priest aka HPrizm w/ Badawi @ Dubspot

"In this episode of Wireless, Dubspot instructor, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Raz Mesinai aka Badawi sits down with experimental hip hop and electronic music producer and lyricist HPrism aka High Priest of New York City's legendary Antipop Consortium for a wide-ranging conversation punctuated by an improvised live electronics jam session. While Raz is an Ableton Certified Dubspot Instructor and has been producing and performing with Live for many years, Priest, on the other hand is currently using Propellerhead Reason as his main production tool. After meeting James Bernard at a Propellerhead Producers Conference, Priest was exposed to the program's versatility and extensive list of synthesizers and samplers and he immediately became an avid Reason user. In their conversation, the two producers talk about their individual creative approaches, their production tools, the utilization of controllers and hardware in live electronic music performances and the importance of engaging with your audience when doing a live show."

Dubspot Interview: Federico Aubele & Jerry Busher

Dubspot interviews Berlin based, South American musician Federico Aubele and touring drummer/multi-instrumentalist Jerry Busher (member of harDCore band Fugazi and sous chef @ DC's Room 11 restaurant). Check it out:

"Dubspot caught up with Aubele at New York City's Gramercy Theatre just before a live performance. He was in town celebrating the release of his new album Berlin 13, which was influenced by Tarot card 13 (death) and the years he spent in the German capital where he embraced the city's strong electronic music identity. In our Soundcheck interview, Aubele talked about mixing and incorporating electronic music production techniques and elements using Ableton Live with live instruments and organic sounds, and also translating that process in a live performance setting with his band, a trio of musicians which includes drummer and multi-instrumentalist Jerry Busher, member of Washington D.C. post-hardcore band Fugazi and pianist and collaborator Will Rast. Federico also told us what he's currently listening to, which includes UK electronic dance music artists Lone and Actress, as well as Detroit house producer Big Strick."

Ableton Live Tutorial: Drum Rack + Impulse = DrumPulse

Once upon a time, in the not too distant past, I was building a drum track and decided to use Drum Rack. While programming my beat and tweaking controls I thought, "Man, I wish Simpler had some of those cool random options that Impulse has so I could use them in Drum Rack." Now, flashing back to the time when Drum Rack came out with Live 7, everyone (myself included) was like, "Yo, forget Impulse! Drum Rack is the stuff!" Then began the war between die-hard Impulse fans and Drum Rack spearheads. But wait! Why should we have to choose? Why is it one or the other? Then I had an idea...

Using Ableton Live w/ Maschine Tutorial - dubspot

In this video Native Instruments product specialist Matt Cellitti, explains and demonstrates how to use Maschine to control Ableton Live and simultaneously as a plugin inside the software. Together Maschine and Ableton are a powerful combination for production and performance. Cellitti starts by showing us how to load the Ableton Live template that can be accessed via Maschine's hardware or Native Instruments bundled Controller Editor software. He then goes into detail of how Maschine can be used to trigger clips, scenes and FX as well as control other parameters such as individual track volume. After this, he explains how to switch Maschine to a standard MIDI controller within Ableton to program and perform new drum parts and synth lines, all without stopping the music in Ableton Live.
