Bluegrass legend and founder of the Foggy Mountain Boys, Earl Scruggs passed away yesterday from natural causes. Earl was born in Shelby, North Carolina on January 6, 1924 and first became famous when Bill Monroe hired him to fill the banjo slot in the Blue Grass Boys band. Like most people of my generation I primarily knew Earl Scruggs from his recurring role, and of course the theme song, of the 60s show The Beverly Hillbillies, which was on reruns in the afternoon during my youth. Earl invented a three finger picking style on the Banjo that is now referred to as the "Scruggs style". R.I.P.
