On this day...

On this day in 1950, Robert "Kool" Bell, bassist and vocalist for the disco-soul-funk band Kool & the Gang was born in Youngstown, Ohio. Robert's family moved early on to Jersey City, New Jersey where Robert and his brother Ronald would begin playing music - perhaps spurred on by their father's famous friend, jazz pianist Thelonius Monk. The Bell brothers' first band played instrumental jazz under the name "The Jazziacs", however this more traditional group eventually morphed into the funk oriented Kool & the Gang, from which they became world famous.
