On this day in 1927 Warner Brothers premiered The Jazz Singer in New York City. The film, starring Al Jolson, was the first "talkie" and heralded a new era of motion picture production. The film was one of the biggest earners in early Warner Brothers history and in a 1998 American Film Institute poll it was rated #90 in the 100 greatest movies of all time. Of course The Jazz Singer wasn't famous just for the dialogue, but the many great songs performed in the film, including the Irving Berlin penned standard "Blue Skies", which is still performed by jazz bands today.
