Studio Monitors - Adam Audio R5X vs Samson Rubicon R5a - The DSP Project

Just by chance I had access to two different brands of monitors both using ribon tweeters that are very simuarly spec'd. Seemed like a perfect oppertunity for a shoot out! The Adam Audio R5X are equipeed with the new XART tweeter claiming to reach an impressive and possibly pointless 50khz. The Samson Rubicon R5a are my old monitors I initally brought just for DJ mixing, but when I extended my stay in the UK they ended up sticking around longer then initaly planed.

Steamworx for Alchemy!

New for Camel Audio's Alchemy and Alchemy Player is Steamworx a library by Martin Walker. Here's the info from Camel Audio:

Steamworx is a cinematic netherworld featuring keyboard instruments made from clocks, drum kits built with steam-powered machines, fog-shrouded soundscapes and gothic choirs. With intricate contraptions, grunge-laden grooves, multi-layered arpeggios and hand-crafted percussion that ooze character and round-robin realism, you will find moods suited to epic soundtrack, delicate ambient, sci-fi, industrial and the supernatural.

This library incorporates over 240MB of new sample content, with specially created instruments, extensive field recordings that add a rich patina of detail, 8-bit SID Chip exotica, plus samplings from an extensive collection of bells, chimes, and gongs. Martin Walker is well known for his music and sound effects design on over a hundred game soundtracks, and for his columns and features on sound design in magazines such as Sound On Sound and Audio Technology.

Go to CamelAudio.com for mp3 demos and ordering information! And if you're interested in sound design make sure to check out the Steamworx pdf which chronicles the making of this library in nine decorative pages. And speaking of Alchemy, version 1.20 is now available. This new update implements 64 bit and features switchable skins - Nice work Camel Audio!

Greenhouse - The Synplant ReFill

New form Soundcells - Greenhouse, the Synplant ReFill for Reason!

"Greenhouse" is an awesome ReFill which is based on samples coming from the popular Synplant software synthesizer which is without any doubt one of the most innovative plugins of recent years. 125+ combinator patches provide an insight into the great and highly characterful sound capabilities Synplant has to offer. Greenhouse patches sound deep and murky, sometimes wishful and dreamy, but overall atmospheric and full of the typical and widely acclaimed Synplant character... In addition, some "One-Shot-FX" kits are included to let you produce some glitchy electro beats. The 24 bit samples were recorded through an analog mixing console to bring the "real world" flavour into our digital world - ready-to-use within this ReFill. And let´s not forget about he 35+ drum samples (as well as 11 Rex files highly processed with additional EQing, compressing...) from the MicroTonic PlugIn which has been recorded the same way as the Synplant samples....

Greenhouse Contents:

- 129 combinator patches
- Deep, murky, evil but also wishful and dreamy are the main keywords
- 114 NNXT patches
- 7 Redrum kits
- 432 Synplant samples, 392 MB uncompressed.
- 35+ drum samples & 11 Rex loops coming from the MicroTonic PlugIn.

Go to www.soundcells.de for mp3 demos and ordering information. Speaking of which, Greenhouse is currently on sale for the low price of 18.90€ (sale ends May 15th.)

Dubspot Ableton Live Tips #10

Creating A Unique Performance Setup (Dorian Concept)

In this Ableton Live video tutorial, we'll explore some techniques inspired by two incredible conversations I had this past week. We will look at the creative possibilities of using the Simpler, some portamento, LFO, and delays, and we'll also explore a great technique for crafting 8 bar drum patterns.

First up, I had the great pleasure of catching Dorian Concept's insanely inspiring set at Low End Theory last week. Dorian Concept is a Vienna-based producer who has developed his own completely original style of keyboard playing. He's been tearing it up at Festivals around the world since bursting on to everyone's radar with the massive tune "Vertical Output" a few years back. His latest release on Ninja Tune is called Her Tears Taste Like Pears, full of funky, synth driven club heaters. He often sits in live improv style with his friend Flying Lotus when they cross paths internationally, and his series of YouTube videos 'Fooling Around With The MicroKorg, Alesis Micron, etc' are straight jaw droppers.

So I had the honor of chatting with him at length at Low End, and I thought I'd share some tidbits from our inspiring conversation. He shared some serious wisdom that would be helpful for any aspiring producer. Turns out he is not classically trained, and he's actually completely self-taught. The great thing about what he has done, is that he has kept it simple and really mastered his instrument, developing his own unique style. With all the tools we have available in our toolbox these days, it is easy to get overwhelmed and the reality is that sometimes it is better to simplify and limit yourself. That is what he has done, truly mastering his Microkorg and Micron and developing his own very distinct style of playing these instruments. We talked about our shared admiration of Squarepusher, as he had a very similar approach, mainly he used one particular sampler for all of his pre-year 2000 productions. He also developed his own very recognizable style of bass playing.

Applying these concepts to working in Ableton Live, I strongly recommend finding a compositional process that works best for you. These tutorial videos are about sharing various production techniques, find the ones that give you the best results and develop them further. Put a few of these techniques together into your bag of tricks, and then work at becoming the master of them. Identify a few elements that will become your signature sound, and then create a body of work with them. Develop your meat grinder, and then crank out the jams.

Stay tuned for the next tutorial, in which Professor Nalepa shares some great tips and techniques for drum programming and sequencing he picked up from Dutty Artz co-founder and Dubspot Instructor Matt Shadetek. The track used at the end of this video is "Wonton Garden" from Matt Shadetek's Dutty House EP, out now on Dutty Artz.

Reason Wizardry Season One!

Nucleus SoundLab has assembled the first ten episodes of Reason Wizardry into one massive bargain called Reason Wizardry Season One! Here's the lowdown from NSL:

Reason Wizardry Season One isn't meant to rehash the basics. It won't show you how to create a pattern in Redrum or how to load a sample in NN-19. Instead, by assuming each user had already read the manual and has a basic knowledge - Reason Wizardry skips directly to the good stuff. Each issue is packed with info on how to get the very most out of Reason devices, how to create your own sounds that step away from the cliches, and the not-so-obvious tricks that will save you time in your productions.

Pick up Reason Wizardry Season One now for $29 download or $39 on DVD from Nucleus SoundLab. Below is the entire issue from July 2009 to wet your appetite:

rude_NHS A Hundred Sides out now on Sotones!

Today, Sotones Music Co-Op releases the debut full length album from rude_NHS. The album, titled A Hundred Sides, covers more terrain than a transatlantic flight; eschewing genres, instead taking the listener on a musical journey over an electronic landscape. This album is a departure for rude_NHS from the Tango 6 ep material, somehow managing to be both more orthodox and experimental at the same time. The songs feel more structured, yet keep you guessing to the direction their heading. Now I've had the pleasure of listening to A Hundred Sides many times in the last few weeks, since rude_NHS mastermind Duncan covertly sent me a copy. And thru Facebook and gmail I've been able to ask him some questions about this release. So let's call this an intereview...

A Hundred Sides starts with the funk banger - "Roy Orbital" this song features the kind of keyboard lines that would make Herbie Hancock proud. Programmed or played?

I actually played the bassline on a bass guitar and the main lead line on guitar into the computer via a guitar to midi converter. They were snips from a much larger jam. Some monophonic ideas i come up with sometimes get put into the sequencer this way.

- One thing that really strikes me about A Hundred Sides is the diverse sounds.  What software/hardware did you primarily use making this album?

All Ableton, plus some Sugar-Bytes and Native Instruments gear. It was mastered in Logic 8 using some top end outboard EQs which sadly i can't remember the make or model of...

- Speaking of diversity you genre hop with ease on A Hundred Sides, covering electro, acid, techno, dubstep, drum and bass, glitch and I'm sure a few other genres I'm not aware of...  Yet the album feels like a body of work and not a jumbled vision.  Did you set out to make this an assorted chronicle in the beginning?

I don't really think about genre when i make stuff, its more grooves and tempo really. I mean there are clearly 'drum and bass' tracks on there, but the plan wasn't strictly to make an eclectic album, it just turned out that when i picked out all the tracks that i clearly liked based on how much work i'd done on them, it turned out they were all a bit different, but really thats just the tempo or the beat. i think behind that they all have a cohesive hue that makes it work i guess.

- The tracks that make up A Hundred Sides flow really well together.  Was song placement a major decision or a happy accident?

I did fiddle around with the track listing for a while, in fact there were more tracks i had planned for it, but i couldn't get that flow i wanted so took i some out and left the ones that sit nice next to each other. i knew which would be first and which would be last, but the stuff in the middle took a bit of time to work out i guess.

- This record really uses the spatial field well. When listening to "A China Wiring Porno" I kept thinking some of the sounds were coming from my surroundings and not my iPod. Who mastered the album?

David Wallace

- Lastly, are you going to do any touring in support of A Hundred Sides?

I'm pretty hopeless at sorting out gigs for myself unless they are my own nights. I have a few dates coming up over the summer months but no tour. If they book me I will come.

In closing A Hundred Sides is a fantastic driving record. And no wonder, as Duncan mentioned on the Sotones website the album was inspired by traveling to university lectures:

I would drive to Southampton and hear blokes zooming past in their cars listening to really bassy stuff, and it just clicked. I need to make a really fat car album.

Pick up A Hundred Sides today from Sotones or iTunes. And if you happen to be in the Southampton area of England, rude_NHS is headlining the Sotones Spring Social on April 30th at The Hobbit!

The devastation from last month's 9.0 earthquake of the coast of Japan was made visible by live television and the internet almost immediately after the quake struck. But the sound of the quake was also captured. (April 15)

Wagon Christ 'Chunkothy' (Official Video)

Taken from the new Wagon Christ album 'Toomorrow', out now on CD, LP and download: ninjatune.net. The one and only Luke Vibert returning to the fray - the king of stoned exotica, ridiculous vocal samples, toothsome puns, swinging rhythm and the psychedelic groove, Vibert has never been one to take himself too seriously, but his music continues to delight.

The 'Chunkothy' video is directed and animated by Celyn Brazier at Nexus with Beccy McCray providing invaluable production skills. Bali Engel helped colour and provided the beautiful animated sequences for the insect loop and fishes. Margot Tsakiri-Scanatovits and Manav Dhir also provided colouring skills and contributed to the animation of the insects. Steve Mc Inerney constructed the final edit with perfect timing and imagination.

The animation was created in Photoshop, with most sequences on one layer. It was as simple as that really. No gimmicks, no tweeny motion tricks, no cgi. Celyn created small beat guides for reference, sometimes following the rhythm, for example on the bouncy ball loops, but mostly as many random patterns and as much weird sh*t that he could possibly make in six weeks.

Look out for the Mexican cat!

52 Reason / Record Tips - Week 52!

It's graduation day!
52 Reason / Record Tips - Thor's Modulation Bus and Step Sequencer:

It's hard to believe it's been 52 Tips already but now we've all got the Reason/Record chops to prove it! For those of you who have been with me since week one, I'm so proud you came all this way with me. For those of you just coming into the series, boy do you have more goodies to find in our past episodes!

In this final week's Tip I'm going to show you around Thor's final sections: The Modulation Bus and Step Sequencer. With these sections under your belt you'll have completed my multi-week "Synth School" series and hopefully be able to approach custom synth sound design with a whole new bag of tricks.

Now there's nothing else to do but to get out there, use this knowledge, and start making more music than ever before!!!

made by robot - Kradle Videos

Bells on Kradle

Quick random improv using Kradle for the Monome

Kradle POC

Quick proof of concept mockup in Max for an Arc based Newtons Cradle style random sequencer (I guess it's technically not random at all). Using the drum sounds in the OOTB Max Java demo patch for ease. I'm not entirely sure it works as a drum machine, it's too all over the place. But I'll slap on some midi/osc outs and see how it sounds hooked up to a more ambient style sound generator.

This is very much POC, the hit zones are still off by a few all I do is check to see if the left one is within a range, and the right one is within a range, if so bang. I'm also considering adding a 2nd set of rotators which you control with the press, these would have a 1/2 intensity setting to differentiate and would also react with their neighbors, this might add to the speed of the collisions.

The spinning and velocity is a taken from a butchered copy of one of Strettas now deprecated "primitives"

Yet more exciting collaboration news was unveiled this week when Prefuse 73 confirmed via twitter that he is working with The Flaming Lips on new material...

"Currently working with: (the)"Flaming Lips" on 2 songs and I think it's the first time I've ever been "scared" by a collaboration. These songs are already AMAZING!"

However, back to the now - this mix below should help pass the next couple of weeks until the new Prefuse 73 album 'The Only She Chapters' is released (25/26 April). The new LP features the voice of Nika aka Zola Jesus, Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond, Trish Keenan and others wrapped up into a textured 54 minute Prefuse adventure.

Africa Hitech - Out in the Streets

Following the dancehall swordplay of first single Blen and the genre-straddling Hitecherous EP, Africa Hitech release their debut album, 93 Million Miles, on May 9th/10th 2011.

Listen to 'Out In The Streets' below - buy it digitally from Bleep, iTunes and other stores now.

Africa Hitech - Out In The Streets by Warp Records

Africa Hitech are Mark Pritchard (of Harmonic 313/Global Communications/countless more psuedonyms fame) and Steve Spacek (of Spacek fame and notable Dilla collaborator). They began bonding over their shared passion for the seemingly disparate spheres of bubbling Detroit techno, soul and fierce Jamaican digital dancehall. It was when they both, by pure coincidence, found themselves living in Australia that the connection was cemented. Africa Hitech is the moniker which represents both Steve and Mark’s love for all things progressive within music, whilst acknowledging that the roots of much of today’s popular music can be traced directly back to Africa.

Bill Walker Meets the Moog Lap Steel

Bill Walker stopped by the Moog Sound Lab to treat us to some incredible live looping improvisation on the Moog Lap Steel.

Ok the gear breakdown (in Bill's own words):

I was running the Moog lap steel through a very basic rig starting with a Keeley compressor set for light compression and a bit of signal boost, into and ethos preamp for both clean and overdriven tones ,into a TC Electronic G Sharp for some dynamic delay and reverb, and finally in to a Looperlative LP-1 8 track loop recorder. I use a Gordius Little Giant midi foot controller to send commands to the Looperlative. My two expression pedals control volume and feedback for my loops.

I use a number of looping techniques that include track speed manipulation, reverse loops, and quantize replace functions. The quantize replace function is what is creating the percolating sequencer sounding loops. I had my quantize replace set to a factor of 16, meaning every time I hit my quantize replace switch , the looper would record for only a 16th of the total loop length. You do this enough times and a cool sequence of notes starts to emerge. I'll often start a piece by first recording a blank loop, and then one by one I start to build a sequence of notes until a highly rhythmic pattern emerges, even out of completely rubato playing.
Its a harder technique to describe than it is to show :-)

Sugar Bytes Turnado

Turnado is your new multi-effect tool crafted especially for massive and real-time audio manipulation, providing countless truly unique effects, creating sounds unheard of every time you turn it on. Turnado is both: hands-on stage performance boost and serious tool for studio perfectionism, giving you direct control of up to 8 different effects at any given time, with a total of 24 effects available.

The idea is simple:
Turn a knob and the effect is on.
Turn the knob further and effect parameters start to move and modulations start to apply.
Turn the knob down and the effect is off.

This one-knob-action fits perfectly for all kinds of studio or stage situation where you bang your midi controller creating wicked breaks to let the crowd dance even harder.

While each effect provides one knob to control it, underneath that easy cover you find effect parameters and modulation engines to be controlled by the main knob in all thinkable ways, which makes loading an effect just the starting point of the way you can go with it.

The powerful "Dictator" mode allows you to animate all main knobs and run that animation with just one fader. This way you easily create and control complex effect layerings and arrangements in a new and inspiring way.

Inventing the Turnado effects, the main focus was on beat manipulation, and you will find a lot of loopers, slicers and graintools, as well as distortions, filters and firstclass delays and reverbs. With the extensive modulation possibilities, each effect covers millions of unbelievable sounds that turn into something new anytime you turn the main knob. Turnado is inspiring you again and again with completely new variations of your original sound and groove.

Turnado comes for Mac/PC as Standalone application and VST/AU plugin and will be released in early summer 2011.

Review: Komplete 7

A quick review and introduction to Komplete 7. I've used it for about 3 months now, so I thought it was time to share my thoughts on it! It's really big so I couldn't go in depth here, but I will do in the following videos.

The software:

Reaktor 5 - a ridiculously in-depth synth-making software
Kontakt 4 - a huge software sampler, great for orchestral stuff
Guitar rig 4 - Some cool guitar and bass amp sims
Rammfire - A Rammstein-influenced metal guitar amp sim
Scarbee MM-Bass - for funky 70s bass sounds
The Finger - really clever live manipulation of samples
Traktor's 12 - Interesting effects
Reflektor - realistic convolution reverb
Battery 3 - Huge drum sampler
Abbey road 60s drums - old school live drum sound
Absynth - really hands-on synth, great for richly harmonic sounds
Massive - a huge synth that's brilliant for powerful bass and lead sounds
Reaktor Prism - An unusual synth built with the aformentioned Reaktor
FM8 - Nice and clean FM Synthesizer
Reaktor Spark - Dynamic synth built with Reaktor
Acoustic Refractions - Unusual sampled instruments (if you can call a washing mashine an instrument)
And 8 pianos/organ/keyboard multisamples.

Yeah, There's a lot.

Propellerhead Software in the Classroom

For the past 10 years music producers, beat-makers, sound designers, and game composers have made Reason's highly creative environment a mainstay of their toolbox. All the while Reason has become a mainstay of the education process as well.

To see how Propellerhead Software's Reason 5, Record 1.5, and Recycle are being taught in the classroom, we visited some top institutions around the world. These educators let us into their classrooms and studios to discuss how they're leveraging the power of the Reason rack to teach not only in-the-box desktop audio production, but hardware-based studio production and even studio wiring/design as well.

MacBeth X-Series Dual SV Filter Demo 1

Saw this amazing video on Synthtopia.com:

Hello again! Here is the first demo- if not basic- of the the new Macbeth X-Series Dual SV (State Variable) Filter module. Being used in conjucntion with it are 2 x X-Series Oscillators (along with sub octaves) giving a very rich sound! Listen out for the stereo sample and hold modulation. When the switch is thrown to invert on one modulation channel- the stereo becomes very aparent. Remember- this is just one module doing the proccessing! Also seen here is a prototype idea for a six input mixer with noise- not dissimilar to the 8 input Mixer 'A' from my Mk1 Series.....
The Dual SV Filter is being swept by one EG from the Mk1 Dual EG module. Audio and control jacks in the the Dual SV Filter are normalised.

Just an improvisation and the first impression of the NI Reaktor 5.51,
with the newly revamped Newscool

Amazingly, unlike any other step sequencer, Newscool uses "Life

Even though, SonicCouture also uses such concept for KONTAKT

On this day...

On this day in 1860 the oldest known recording of a human voice was made in France by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville, the inventor of the Phonoautograph. The Phonoautograph, patented in 1857, was designed to transcribe sound waves as undulations or other deviations in a line traced on smoke-blackened paper or glass. It wasn't until 1877 that Charles Cros realized the phonautograph recordings could be converted back into sound by photoengraving the tracing into a metal surface to create a playable groove. Before Cros was able to put his ideas into practice, the announcement of Thomas Edison's phonograph, which recorded sound waves by indenting them into a sheet of tinfoil from which they could be played back immediately, temporarily relegated Cros's less direct method to obscurity. Below is a video featuring said recording:
